Your payslip, bank statement and ATO income statement do different jobs. Matching them helps explain income before a loan application. It does not guarantee that a lender will accept a particular amount.
The Fair Work Ombudsman lists gross and net pay, pay period, payment date, deductions and relevant pay components among payslip information. The ATO explains how to access income statements reported through Single Touch Payroll. Neither sets a universal loan-document checklist.
Match a pay period before annualising it
Start with one payslip and its corresponding deposit. Record employer, pay-period dates, payment date, gross pay, tax, other deductions, net pay and destination account. If pay is split between accounts, find all deposits rather than treating the first as the whole payment.
Keep employer super contributions separate from cash received. Do not add year-to-date pay to the current-period figure; they overlap. Identify reimbursements rather than assuming they are repeatable wages.
Explain the difference with a reconciliation row
Here is a hypothetical fortnightly example:
- Gross pay: $2,860.
- Tax withheld: $630.
- Other deductions: $90.
- Net pay: $2,140, matching the bank deposit.
The check is $2,860 - $630 - $90 = $2,140. Multiplying gross by 26 produces $74,360; multiplying net by 26 produces $55,640. These are annualised illustrations, not the same measure and not lender-assessed income. A fortnightly period also differs from being paid twice a month.
If figures do not reconcile, ask payroll for an explanation or correction. Keep originals and corrections rather than editing a payslip or bank statement yourself.
Check the ATO period and status
The ATO says income statements are available through its online services in myGov or the ATO app. Multiple employers can mean multiple statements. Check employer and financial year before comparing with current payslips.
A previous full year will not match a current part-year total. The ATO's tax-ready guidance says unfinalised amounts may change and recommends waiting for Tax ready before preparing and lodging a tax return. A lender decides what evidence it needs; a tax-ready label is not loan approval.
Explain changes rather than hiding them
For a pay rise, new job, unpaid leave or irregular overtime, prepare a dated explanation with employer records. Ask the lender or broker what evidence applies to your employment type. Our overtime and bonus guide covers variable pay, while the bank statement guide covers spending and commitments.
National wage statistics cannot replace this exercise. Our national wage bill explainer shows why economy-wide wage growth differs from an individual's pay rise. For an application, the useful result is an explainable record of earnings and the cash reaching your account.
